What is the role of Women in Sikhism?

The role of women is outlined in the Sikh scriptures which state that Sikh women is to be regarded as equal to the Sikh men. They are allowed to lead religious congregations, do Akhand Path, perform Kirtan, and participate in all religious, cultural, social and secular activities. In Sikhism men and women are considered two sides of the same coin. Guru Nanak Dev Ji said in 1499 that it is women who keep the race going and that we should not consider women cursed and condemned since, from women are born leaders and rulers.

Sikh history regards the names of several women like Mata Gujri, Mai Bhago, Mata Sundri, Rani Sahib Kaur, Rani Sada Kaur and Maharani Jind Kaur to mention a few, who played an important role in the events of their time.
